The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) proudly launched three new book publications during the 39th Annual Scientific Meeting at the Manila Hotel last July 12, 2017.
Launched were two books written by National Scientist Ricardo M. Lantican, entitled: “Science Nuggets 1 From Aristotle to Stem Cells” and “Science Nuggets 2 From the Universe to Energy, Food, and Agriculture”, and one book by Academician Evelyn Mae Tecson-Mendoza entitled: “Biosketches: Filipino Trailblazers in Science and Technology, Defining the Contribution of NAST Academicians to S&T and Its Development in the Philippines”.
The book launch was hosted by Academician Asuncion K. Raymundo. As described by Academician Fabian M. Dayrit, Science Nuggets Volume 1 treats the readers to numerous stories about famous scientists, not to tell us how great they are, but how human they are. It takes the readers on a journey through the history of science, from Aristotle’s theory that Earth is the center of the universe to the advances in stem cell research.
The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) presented the Resolutions which were the result of three regional scientific meetings and the 39th Annual Scientific Meeting to Sec. Fortunato de la Peña of the Department of Science and Technology and USec. Eduardo Gongona of the Department of Agriculture.
In his response, Sec. de la Peña committed the DOST towards the attainment of the Blue Economy, including its related resolutions. He also invited the other Departments of the government to do the same. Sec. De la Peña also noted the importance of partnering with LGUs in implementing research and development as also mentioned by several speakers of the ASM. Sec. De la Peña also highlighted the importance of the maritime and shipbuilding industry, and encouraged continuous discussion and research towards the Blue Economy.
Responding on behalf of the Department of Agriculture, USec. Gongona expressed support for the creation of a new agency on Fisheries and Ocean Resources, but advised that the timing of its establishment is very important. He noted that billions are lost due to foreign poaching, dynamite fishing, and other malpractices and threats. USec. Gongona encouraged better marketing and commercialization of the numerous researches which have already been done by our scientists.
