The TWAS Prize for Young Scientist in the Philippines for 2018 is given to Dr. Alonzo Gabriel of University of the Philippines Diliman. His research interests include predictive model building for food quality and safety, hurdle technology, and microbial stress adaptation and its implication to food safety and quality. He is currently exploring the interfaces of food science and nutrition through functional food product development, and investigations on the effects of diet, nutrition, and health status on the human microbiome.
Dr. Gabriel is a Professor 1 and currently the chair of the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, College of Home Economics, UP Diliman. He is also a Registered Microbiologist (RMicro) and a Diplomate (DPAM) of the Philippine Academy of Microbiology.
The TWAS Prize for Young Scientist in the Philippines is an award given to an outstanding young Filipino scientist by NAST PHL and The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries. One award each year, consisting of US $2,000 and a plaque, is given in the selected discipline for the year - biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics. For 2018, the TWAS Prize was given in the field of Biology.
Lecture and awarding ceremony was held last December 3, 2018 at Luxent Hotel, Quezon City.
2018 Research Upgrading and Performance Evaluation

Through conducting Training Workshop on Writing and Presenting Proposals towards Building Science Culture and Seminar-Workshop on Enhancing the Research/Thesis Writing/ Teaching Capabilities of Special Science School Teachers (Module 1), NAST reached 875 scientists and researchers in 5 regions this year.

This is part of the project entitled Evaluation and Improvement of the Research Publication and IP Productivity of the National R&D System that will enable researchers to implement research projects and produce scientific paper that can be published in international refereed journals.
Under this project, a total of 52 papers and 13 utility models from Food Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), Industrial Technology Development Institute, Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI), Forest Products Research and Development Institute, Advance Science and Technology Institute, PAGASA, PHIVOLCS and Regional Office 5 were awarded during DOST Intellectual Property Awarding Ceremony held at PICC on December 18, 2018. PNRI was awarded as the institute with the highest number of publications while FNRI was awarded as the institute with the highest number of utility model registrations.
A cash incentive of Php 60,000.00 was given to DOST employees who have published in internationally refereed journals which are either Thomson Reuters (formerly ISI) or Scopus listed journals. Php 80,000.00 was also given to technology generators who were able to patent their technologies. On the other hand, Php 15,000.00 was given to registered utility models. The DOST employees also received a plaque and certificate together with the cash incentive.
The DOST institution with the highest number of awards received, Philippine Nuclear Research Institute and Food and Nutrition Research Institute, received a cash incentive of Php 50,000.00. (Niña Erika V. Barias/NAST)
Dialogue with NAST Scientists (Lecture Series) and Symposium for the Youth

NAST conducted the Dialogue with NAST Scientists (Lecture Series) and Symposium for the Youth in the following provinces:
- Camiguin Island (January 24-25, 2018)
- Mulanay, Quezon (March 5-6, 2018)
- Bacolod City (April 10, 2018)
- Clark, Pampanga (May 8, 2018)
- Catarman, Northen Samar (September 17-18, 2018)
- Tagum City, Davao del Norte (September 24-25, 2018)
Daet, Camarines Norte (November 26-27, 2018)These activities aim to introduce NAST PHL and its members (National Scientists, Academicians, and Corresponding Members) to different sectors of the society. Participants of the Dialogue with NAST Scientists are faculty members from the state colleges and universities in the area, representatives from LGUs, and other interested researchers.
Symposium for the Youth participants are the students from various schools in the vicinity to encourage them to take careers in science.
Though these activities, there were 525 researchers and 1050 students reached. NAST and DOST awards were presented to them. (Niña Erika V. Barias/NAST)
